News 12th Annual Starry NYCLU Broadway Stands Up To Freedom Benefit to Headline Tony Kushner, Lena Hall and More Broadway's Tony Kushner, Lena Hall, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Condola Rashad, Telly Leung and Robin DeJesus will headline the 12th annual NYCLU Benefit Broadway Stands Up to Freedom at the NYU Skirball Center July 21.

The NYCLU is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights and was founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Amongst the big-hitting Broadway lineup on July 21, other notable performers will include radio personality and Playbill.com staff writer Seth Rudetsky, Todd Buonopane ("30 Rock") and Broadway Stands Up for Freedom founding performer Liana Stampur with the Clinton Curtis band. Susan Blackwell will return to host, Daniel Goldstein returns to direct and Paul Staroba will make his NYCLU debut as music director.

Proceeds from the show benefit the NYCLU’s youth programs, including its work with LGBT teenagers and the Teen Activist Project, which engages New York City youth as organizers and peer educators on civil rights and civil liberties.

In addition to the performances, the one-night-only benefit will feature an original video by Broadway’s Andrew Keenan-Bolger (see his 2013 video here) and new music by Broadway composer Michael Friedman.

In a statement, NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said, “We’re thrilled that so many talented performers and artists generously support our work and celebrate the vital link between the arts and civil liberties.” Many of Broadway's best and brightest have lent their talents to NYCLU benefits in years prior, including: Michael Cerveris, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Gavin Creel, Randy Graff, Tonya Pinkins, Lisa Kron, Rebecca Luker, Denis O’Hare and John Tartaglia.
