Lists 14 Shows the Cast of TV’s Younger Loved Hilary Duff, Miriam Shor, Sutton Foster, and more share their favorites.
Cast Patrick Lewis/Starpix

Filming in New York City, the cast of TVLand’s Younger has an opportunity casts of most other cable shows don’t: visiting the theatre! And from Sutton Foster to Miriam Shor, this cast has a history onstage; Foster is a two-time Tony winner, Shor was the original Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch 20 years ago, Peter Hermann boasts three Broadway credits, and Molly Bernard earned her chops Off-Broadway!

Here, the theatre-loving cast of Younger—now in Season 5, with a sixth season already announced—shares the plays and musicals they’ve seen and loved.

Miriam Shor plays Diana
“I just saw Yerma. Damnit that was amazing. But not for nothing I saw Three Tall Women. Let me just say I didn’t think I would ever get to see Glenda Jackson onstage. She was in Parliament, that wasn’t happening anymore, I didn’t think that was every going to happen, so that was one of the highlights of my life—getting to see her onstage. A dream fulfilled. And that whole cast was fantastic. Laurie Metcalf is one of my idols. I saw The Band’s Visit, which I have a couple friends in. I have an interesting relationship with musicals; I have a really high bar. That one flew over the bar. It was just beautiful and the musicians onstage are incredible.”

Molly Bernard plays Lauren
“I really loved Miles for Mary. It was really good at Playwrights Horizons. Oh! I saw Sutton Foster in Thoroughly Modern Millie [at the Actors Fund reunion concert]. I wrote her fan mail when I was 14 about Thoroughly Modern Millie, but I only watched it on YouTube. I never saw it in person, so I was weeping when I saw it. I couldn’t even deal. I lost my mind.”

Debi Mazar plays Maggie
“I’ve been going to musicals. My daughter’s a musical theatre freak. She’s been to Hamilton for the second time, Wicked… I had to go see Dear Evan Hansen with my daughter, who knows every single word. I had no desire to go and [then] I fell in love with Ben Platt. I was blown away. My daughter has turned me on to musical theatre because I’m not the jazz hands gal. And working with Sutton Foster has brought me back a little to it.”

Hilary Duff plays Kelsey
“I just saw Come From Away and I was obsessed with it. I loved how relatable the characters were. You’re like, ‘Oh my God, there are nice people in the world.’ Also, my boyfriend and I went and saw Hello, Dolly! and he has the biggest crush on Bernadette Peters now. He’s like, ‘Who is that and why am I just learning about her?’ I was like, ‘You live under a rock and I’m right here, so calm down.’”

Charles Michael Davis plays Zane
“I’ve seen Hamilton. I saw Three Tall Women. I saw Denzel Washington do The Iceman Cometh. That monologue at the end—I would love to do that.”

Sutton Foster plays Liza
“I loved Once on This Island. I went bonkers for it. Once on This Island was in the pocket for me. [The year the original production premiered] was the year Secret Garden, Once On This Island, Miss Saigon, and Will Rogers Follies [were nominated for the Tony for Best Musical], and I was 16 years old or something like that. Those were my shows, you know? When I came to New York I saw Miss Saigon and I saw The Secret Garden, I did the national tour of Will Rogers Follies, and I had never seen Once on This Island, but I knew it inside and out, I knew the album backwards and forwards. As soon as I walked into the theatre I was like, ‘What is happening?!’ I didn't know how they had transformed the space, and then as soon as the music started, I was like (gasps), and then as soon as I heard ’One small girl’ I was like sobbing. And I'm like, ‘I can't deal, I can't deal with this.’ The best part is that at my Pilates studio, Stephen Flaherty takes the class on Sundays! He takes the class before me or after me, so I see him all the time, and I like attacked him [after seeing the show]. And the best part was that I went, ‘I just have to tell you that I saw Once on This Island’ and he's like, ‘I just have to tell you, we just binge-watched Younger! I just watched all four seasons!’ But I was able to just gush and tell him what an amazing show it was. I just loved every moment of it. That was my favorite thing that I've seen. I was weeping and my husband had never seen it and I turned to him and I was like, ‘If he doesn't like this, I don't know what I'm gonna do.’ So dramatic. And I turned to him and I was like, ‘Did you like that?‘ And he goes, "I loved it." and I went, ‘OH THANK GOD.’”

Peter Hermann plays Charles
“I loved Once on This Island, too. We just saw Mean Girls and we loved it. It's so hard to have a show with a flat out message—like that show has a message—and not make the audience back up because they're receiving a message. To have the audience hear something about the way we all treat each other, and the way that women treat each other, and about friendship and support and all that, and have the audience lean in, I think that's a very hard thing to do. And I love, I take such delight, as we all do, in watching a cast that loves what they're doing. And holy cow! We had an absolutely fantastic time.”
