Mary Poppins and The Producers will vie for the Best New Musical Award in a category that also includes Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Woman in White. Among Poppins' other nominations are those for Best Actor in a Musical (Gavin Lee), Best Actress in a Musical (Laura Michelle Kelly) and Best Director (Richard Eyre). The Producers scored nominations for its three co-stars, Nathan Lane and Lee Evans (Best Actor in a Musical) and Leigh Zimmerman (Best Actress in a Musical). Tony Award winner Susan Stroman was also nominated for two awards for her Producers work: Best Director and Best Theatre Choreographer.

Best New Play nominees include Marina Carr's By the Bog of Cats, David Eldridge's Festen, Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? and Alan Bennett's The History Boys. The revivals of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd and Grand Hotel as well as the Trafalgar Studios production of Simply Heavenly were all nominated for Outstanding Musical Production.

Dame Judi Dench received her 13th Laurence Olivier nomination for her performance as Countess of Rossillion in All's Well That Ends Well. Dench is nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a field that also includes Samuel Barnett (The History Boys), Amanda Harris (Othello) and Eddie Redmayne (The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?).

The Laurence Olivier Awards are presented annually by The Society of London Theatre. Established in 1976, the late Lord Laurence Olivier agreed to have his name associated with the awards in 1984. The awards are judged by four separate panels for theatre, opera, dance and affiliate productions.
