25 Days of Tonys: What Would Be the Title of Laurie Metcalf’s Bio-Play? | Playbill

Video 25 Days of Tonys: What Would Be the Title of Laurie Metcalf’s Bio-Play? The Hillary and Clinton star reveals who she wants to write a show about her life.

In Hillary and Clinton, Tony Award nominee Laurie Metcalf plays a version of Hillary Clinton in an alternate universe—but one very much like our own—in the year 2008.

In the year 2008 (in this universe) while Hillary Rodham Clinton campaigned for the Presidency for the first time, Metcalf was in the midst of her run in November, her first Broadway collaboration with director Joe Mantello and her first Tony Award nomination. In 2013 and 2016, Clinton served as Secretary of State and then, simultaneously, ran a second campaign for President; Metcalf earned two more Tony nominations for The Other Place (again directed by Mantello) and Misery; Lucas Hnath enjoyed the world premiere of Hillary and Clinton in Chicago.

In 2017, Clinton was not President, but Metcalf did become a Tony winner for her role as Nora in Hnath’s A Doll’s House Part 2, directed by Mantello. Last year, as Clinton became a frequent theatre-goer, Metcalf won again for Three Tall Women and Hnath tinkered with Hillary and Clinton.

And now, all three converge in Hnath’s play about this “alternate” Hillary, played by Metcalf. And though the play is not intended as a biography, Playbill asked Metcalf who she would want to write the play about her life. See her answer in the video above.
