The limited engagement of Ray Leslee (music) and Philip S. Goodman's (book and lyrics) musical is scheduled to run through Dec. 21. Esther Muschol directs the production, which is based on Jefferson Young's award-winning novel. Michael Schnack is musical director.
Set in Mississippi after World War II, A Good Man, according to press notes, concerns the story of "Prince" Albert, "a poor sharecropper who wants nothing more than to create a clean, white house for his family. His simple plan throws his whole world out of joint, and puts his family and himself in terrible danger." The musical features a blues, gospel and Americana score.
About his show, composer Leslee said in a statement, "A Good Man attempts to entertain while saying something important about the human condition — about the need to express oneself — the need for respect — the basic human right to a pursuit of happiness. One simple man willing to give his life for these things can be quite moving. Albert is a true hero."
A Good Man was previously presented at the 2004 National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) Festival.
