PlayBlog A Musical Safari About Apes in Love? By a Pulitzer Winner? Would you believe a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright penned "a musical safari into the fevered hearts of apes in love!"? Well, it's true: John Patrick Shanley lends his talents to Off-Broadway's LAByrinth Theater Company for its annual spring benefit May 10 at The Lucille Lortel Theater.

The Monkey Show, penned and to be directed by Shanley, is an original work that features "music, bananas and special guest artists." The scribe previously provided LAB with the unique theatrical events Obsession and Love & Revenge, featuring Idina Menzel, Christopher Meloni, Orfeh, Yul Vázquez, Mark Linn-Baker and more.

No casting has yet been announced for this show. Jackie Judd and Peter Picard will host the one-night-only benefit performance with co-hosts Jeffrey A. Horwitz and Debbie Ohanian. Proceeds from the evening will benefit LAByrinth Theater Company’s current 18th season.

Shanley earned the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play with his Doubt, which he also adapted into the feature film. He has also penned the plays Dirty Story, Defiance, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Savage in Limbo and Where’s My Money? He also wrote the screenplays for "Live From Baghdad" (HBO), "Alive," "Joe Versus the Volcano" and the Academy Award-winning "Moonstruck."
