News A Prehistoric Ritual: Anselmi's Musical Wedding Takes the Plunge May 16 in NYC Audiences can get a glimpse at a new musical about the personalities and pressures of a modern-day wedding May 16 when an hourlong excerpt of Barbara Anselmi's The Wedding Project is heard at Off-Broadway's 45th Street Theatre.

Still under its temporary title, the show "takes a skewed look at a modern day wedding. The new musical concentrates on the wedding reception and the unusual behavior by the guests, hosts and newlyweds."

This is the third in a series of evenings of new work from members of the BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. The series is produced by Musicals Tonight! (Mel Miller, artistic director) and Musical Mondays Theatre Lab (Bick Goss and Frank Evans, artistic and managing directors). Miller presents Musicals Tonight! shows in the 45th Street venue in midtown's theatre district.

Advanced BMI Workshop composer Barbara Anselmi has served as musical director for nine Musicals Tonight! productions including The Gay Divorce, My Favorite Year and The Roar of the Greasepaint/The Smell of the Crowd. Her writing career started with the CD "All Join Together" (title song), which raised over $40,000 for the New York Times 9/11 Fund. She was commissioned by the JCC and Anti-Defamation League to compose music for The Orphan Train (book and lyrics by Susan Nanus) published by Samuel French.

Lyrics by Carla Rose Arnone, Jack Lechner, Ernie Lijoi, Will Randall, Michael Scheman and Todd Yard. Scenes are by Tara Smith and Will Randall. Schele Williams directs.

The May 16 cast includes Ethan James Duff, Leslie Alexander, Ben Cameron, Lianne Marie Dobbs, Barbara Rosenblat, Sebastian Arcelus, Lori Ann Strunk and Heather Rolf. The performance is at 6:16 PM. Admission is $15. The 45th Street Theatre is at 354 W. 45th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. For reservations, call (212) 989-6706 or e-mail [email protected].
