The glam-rock performance piece starts with a midnight show, and continues with scheduled dates throughout the summer for an unlimited, open-ended run.
Hedwig is presented by In Good Company, in association with the historic Baronet Theatre, in their first musical endeavor.
Aaron Berk, who appeared in the musical in Washington, Syracuse, and Rochester, will play the title role in New Jersey. He was recently in Shockheaded Peter Off-Broadway, and appeared in Hair and The Rocky Horror Show in Europe.
The groundbreaking, Obie Award-winning Off-Broadway Hedwig (which spawned a film adaptation after running 857 performances at the Jane Street Theatre) tells the story of "internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing, East German, rock 'n' roll goddess, who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation.
His/her tale is performed by Hedwig as a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine, backed by the hard-rocking band "The Angry Inch." In Jersey, "The Angry Inch" is comprised of back-up man Yitzhak (rocker Bre Cade of the Jersey Shore), keys/rhythm guitarist Skszp (Steven "Squiggy" Minutillo of the popular New Jersey jam band, One-Eyed Jack), lead guitarist Krzyzhtoff (Billy Horn, Buffalo-based rock musician, actor, and playwright), bassist Jacek (Stephen Petry, New Jersey multi-instrumentalist), and Schlatko on the drums (Michael Lapp, NJ/NYC musician and improv performer).
Anthony D'Amato, a New Jersey soul-rock vocalist and professional actor, will direct the entire production. He recently directed the highly acclaimed production of the controversial '60s rock show, Hair, at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, which has been praised by the show's original author, director, and producer, leading to future commercial projects with the musical.
Tickets for Hedwig and the Angry Inch are general admission, $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Opening weekend, June 2 & 3, will be a special part of Jersey Pride, where $1 of every ticket will be donated. Currently scheduled performances are June 2 at midnight, June 3, 16, 30 and July 7 at 8 PM, with more being added.
