The renewal follows Emmy winner and Tony nominee Jeff Daniels (God of Carnage, Redwood Curtain) September tweet, "It's official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3." HBO then established that an official order for season three had not yet been made.

Aaron Sorkin's TV drama, which takes place behind the scenes of a cable news show, also stars Emily Mortimer, Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. (Spring Awakening, Rabbit Hole), Tony nominee Alison Pill (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Miracle Worker), Tony nominee Thomas Sadoski (Other Desert Cities, Reasons to Be Pretty), Dev Patel, Olivia Munn, Tony nominee Sam Waterston (Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Hamlet) and Grace Gummer (The Columnist, Arcadia).

Academy Award winner and Tony nominee Jane Fonda (33 Variations, There Was a Little Girl) played a recurring guest role, for which she received an Emmy nomination.

"I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember," HBO's Michael Lombardo is quoted in Variety as saying.
