News ABC Picks Up "Modern Family" Pilot Starring Broadway's Ferguson The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee's Jesse Tyler Ferguson will appear in the upcoming ABC series "Modern Family."

ABC picked up the pilot, a mockumentary about three suburban couples, including a gay couple, a straight couple and a multiethnic couple. In addition to Ferguson, "Modern Family" also features Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara, who currently appears as Matron "Mama" Morton in the Broadway revival of Chicago. Thirteen episodes of the series, which is being penned by writer-producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, have been ordered.

Ferguson's numerous stage credits include A Midsummer Night's Dream, On the Town, Little Fish, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. Television appearances include "Ugly Betty," "Do Not Disturb," "The Class" and "Sally Hemings: An American Scandal."
