After an acclaimed New York run in 2009-2010, The Temperamentals will premiere April 9 and officially open April 16 for a run through May 22 at the Blank's 2nd Stage Theatre. Michael Matthews will direct.
"Ugly Betty" actor Michael Urie and Thomas Jay Ryan were among the original New York cast members. Casting for the Blank production will be announced shortly.
The Hollywood-set play, the title of which refers to the code for homosexual in the early 1950's, centers on communist Harry Hay and designer Rudi Gernreich, who create the Mattachine Society – one of the first gay rights organizations in the U.S. Numerous figures from the film and fashion industry figure into the story.
The Temperamentals premiered in New York in 2009 as a showcase production at the TBG Theater's 40-seat Black Box Studio, and later extended into a full two-month run at the TBG's 99-seat space. Critics praised the production. Daryl Roth, Stacy Shane and Martian Entertainment aligned to present a commercial run of the play in early 2010, which ran for 11 previews and 91 performances.
