Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by 2005 MacArthur Fellow Jonathan Lethem, the musical is conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin with a book by Itamar Moses and music and lyrics by Michael Friedman. Camille A. Brown choreographs.

Fortress, according to press notes, is described as a "heartbreakingly beautiful tale of the childhood friendship between Dylan Ebdus and Mingus Rude, set against the backdrop of the musical landscape of the end of the twentieth century. It is a story of 1970s Brooklyn and beyond – of black and white, soul and rap, block parties and blackouts, friendship and betrayal, comic books and 45s."

The cast features Adam Chanler-Berat as Dylan Ebdus; Kyle Beltran as Mingus Rude; Tony nominee Andre De Shields as Barrett Rude Senior, Mingus’ grandfather; Kevin Mambo as Barrett Rude, Jr.; Alex Organ as Dylan’s father Abraham; Patty Breckenridge as Dylan’s mom and Mrs. Lomb; Etai Benshlomo as Arthur; Nick Christopher as the neighborhood bully Robert; Jeremy Dumont as Gabe; Carla Duren as Lala and Abby; Alison Hodgson as Liza; Jahi Kearse as Henry and Raf; Traci Lee as Marilla; Britton Smith; Akron Watson; and Juson Williams.

The production has musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Jessica Pabst, lighting design by Tyler Micoleau, sound design by Rob Kaplowitz and projection design by Jeff Sugg. The assistant choreographer is Francine E. Ott.
