Adam Rapp's Gompers, Tale of a Steel Town, Features Anthony Rapp, In Pittsburgh

News   Adam Rapp's Gompers, Tale of a Steel Town, Features Anthony Rapp, In Pittsburgh Anthony Rapp of Rent and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, appears in the world premiere of brother Adam Rapp's Gompers, at City Theatre in Pittsburgh May 6-30.

Billed as the largest show in the history of City Theatre, Gompers is directed by artistic director Tracy Brigden and features an ensemble cast of 10.

Anthony Rapp performed in City Theatre's 2003 run of Hedwig and The Angry Inch. The new play's cast includes Pittsburgh favorites Robin Walsh and Bingo O'Malley.

In Rapp's newest play, "the steel mill has closed in the town of Gompers," according to the City Theatre announcement. "While prejudice, poverty and crime are rampant, there are signs of hope when a Blue Jesus is seen walking on water, a golden greyhound is found under a tree, and riverboat gambling is promised. In Gompers, Rapp creates characters who use wicked, sometimes brutal, contemporary humor to make the best of their circumstances. With equal skill he strips away these fronts to reveal the fear and pain in their hearts."

Also featured in Gompers are Jeff Carpenter, Garbie Dukes, John Magaro, Danny Mastrogiorgio, Demond Robertson, Molly Simpson and Kiff Vanden Heuvel.

The design team includes David Korins (scenic), Angela M. Vesco (costume), Jeff Croiter (lighting) and J Hagenbuckle (original music and sound). Adam Rapp's play, Blackbird, had its American premiere at City Theatre directed by Tracy Brigden and recently opened in New York. His play, Stone Cold Dead Serious, is one of 10 included in the 2002-03 "Best Plays" theatre yearbook. Other plays include Nocturne, Faster and Finer Noble Gases.
