Following Walmartopia (which ends its run Dec. 30) into the Off-Broadway theatre will be The Adding Machine: A Chamber Musical, which made its premiere in February at the Next Theater in Evanston, IL. Variety reports that the new musical, based on Elmer Rice's 1923 play, will begin performances at the Minetta Lane in February 2008. David Cromer, who directed the Illinois run, will repeat his work for New York audiences. The show's original stars — including Joel Hatch, Amy Warren and Cyrilla Baer — are expected to be part of the production as well.
The Adding Machine features a score by Joshua Schmidt and a libretto by Schmidt and Jason Loewith; the latter is the artistic director of the Next Theater. The musical, according to the trade paper, follows "an everyman anti-hero named Mr. Zero, who finds his job replaced by the new tool of the title and then promptly offs his boss."
Scott Morfee will produce the musical, which will feature set design by Takeshi Kata.
