News After Success, Managing Director Sam Sweet Leaves DC's Shakespeare Theatre June 30 Sam Sweet, the managing director of The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC, is stepping down June 30, he told the theatre's staff and board March 12.

Sam Sweet, the managing director of The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC, is stepping down June 30, he told the theatre's staff and board March 12. With the goals of a 1995 five-year strategic plan met, and a second plan now in place, Sweet felt it was a time for him seek "a new challenge" beyond the acclaimed classical theatre. Sweet joined The Shakespeare Theatre in 1988 as business manager, and was named managing director of The Washington Performing Arts Society in 1993. He returned to The Shakespeare Theatre in January 1995 as managing director, working in partnership with artistic director Michael Kahn.

The theatre is reportedly investigating creating another space and using its current location as a second space.
