Ahmet Zappa to Bring Henson Puppet Musical Fantasy "Fraggle Rock" to Film

News   Ahmet Zappa to Bring Henson Puppet Musical Fantasy "Fraggle Rock" to Film Jim Henson's puppet musical fantasy series "Fraggle Rock" will undergo a big-screen treatment courtesy of Ahmet Zappa, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

The trade publication says executive producer Zappa will turn the cult 1980's HBO show into "a full-length live-action musical fantasy starring the classic characters."

"(Zappa) recently created his own fantasy property ('Mighty McFearless'), and we had him in to talk about books and movies," Jim Henson Co. co-CEO Lisa Henson told the Reporter. "During that conversation, I had an intuition that he might be a 'Fraggle Rock' fan. He jumped out of his seat when he heard our idea of making 'Fraggle Rock' into a feature-length movie."

The original series created by Henson — and featuring music by Philip Balsam, Dennis Lee and Robert J. Walsh — aired on HBO from 1983-1987 and was then made into an animated series that lasted only one season. The world of "Fraggle Rock" consisted of an eccentric inventor (human) who toils away in his workshop while Fraggles, tiny working Doozers and giant Gorgs all inhabited their intersecting worlds.

The film is said to bring the world of the Fraggles more into the world of the "Silly Creatures" known as humans and include puppet stars Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red.

No release date has been set, but Zappa is at work on the first treatment — which may go through a screenwriter and director before it comes to fruition. Zappa is said to be looking to get musician friends to write original songs for the movie. "We're taking the movie as far as we can independently because the company has a big personal investment in how the movie turns out," stated Henson, who runs the company with her brother Brian Henson.
