Black 2: Broadway, billed as a celebration of "the contributions of African-American Performers in Theatre," features a live band, background vocalists, dance and music performances. In addition, to cultivate future artists, the variety show will spotlight rising stars from theatre as well as music and dance.
Simone is currently in the Broadway production of Aida as the title role. The daughter of the late Nina Simone was previously seen on The Great White Way in Rent. and in the national touring companies of Jesus Christ Superstar and Rent.
Fellow one-named singer Shanice has played a stint on the Broadway stage as Eponine in Les Misérables. A recording star since the age of 11, Shanice can be remembered for her Grammy-nominated album "Inner Child" featuring the song "I Love Your Smile."
Songstress Dash made a name for herself as one-third of the 70's recording trio LaBelle with Patti LaBelle and Nona Hendryx. The singer will join fellow recording artist Patterson. Latanya Hall serves as the vocal director for the production.
The premiere of Black 2: Broadway saw performances with stars Savion Glover (Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk), Lillias White (Once on This Island), Billy Porter (Little Shop of Horrors) and Darius de Haas (Rent). Subsequent performers include Melba Moore, B.J. Crosby, Victor Trent Cook, Marva Hicks, Phylicia Rashad, Sheryl Lee Ralph, La Chanze, Aisha de Haas, Adrienne Lenox, Michael McElroy, and Malik Yoba.
