News   Aiming for an Off-Broadway Run, It's Karate, Kid! Gets NYC Readings June 20-21
The Four Corners Project is presenting two staged-reading performances of It's Karate, Kid!, the spoofy, raunchy martial arts musical comedy seen in a cult-hit showcase production in 2004.

The June 20-21 presentations are directed by Jake Hirzel and choreographed by Jennifer L. Mudge. Kevin Smith Kirkwood is musical director vocal arranger.

Written by Travis Kramer, It's Karate, Kid! The Musical "is an outrageous and unconventional riff on the beloved '80s film ['The Karate Kid']," according to the producers, who are eyeing a future commercial Off-Broadway run.

The score includes 17 songs, including "Wax On! Wax Off!," "'A' My Name is Ali," "I'm Only Happy When I'm Bad," "Unsavory Things" and "We Are the Bitchkicks."

It's Karate, Kid! enjoyed a successful New York premiere at Off-Off-Broadway's Teatro La Tea on Manhattan's Lower East Side in December 2004.

The cast for the June readings includes Jim Bray (as Daniel-San Larusso); Jennifer Byrne (Lucille Larusso); Michael Cunio (Johnny Lawrence); Michael Fasano (Freddie Fernandez); Natalie Joy Johnson (Crazy Old Bitch); Kevin Smith Kirkwood (Mr. Miyagi); Thomas Lash (Evil Sensei); Pearl Sun (Ali Mills); and Kerry Flanagan, Rebecca Jones and Mary Kelley and as the trio of fearsome Bitchkicks. Ryan Boda, Marcus Collins and Melina Lizette round out the ensemble. For more information, including venue and performance times, members of the industry may call (917) 309-0469 or e-mail before June 17.
