News   Alana Arenas Will Star in Marie Antoinette, Modern-Day Comedic Take on Tragic Queen of France, at Steppenwolf
Marie Antoinette, David Adjmi's comedic take on the young queen of France, will make its Chicago premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Presented as part of Steppenwolf's 2014-15 season that explores the question, "How did I get here?," Marie Antoinette begins previews Feb. 5, 2015, prior to an official opening Feb. 15. The production runs through May 10 in Steppenwolf's Upstairs Theatre.

Directed by Robert O'Hara (Bootycandy, Etiquette of Vigilance), the production will feature Alana Arenas (Tribes, Belleville) as Marie Antoinette, Tim Hopper (The Night Alive, Present Laughter) as her husband Louis XVI, Ora Jones (The Wheel, Three Sisters) as Yolande de Polignac and Mrs. Sauce and Alan Wilder as Sheep.

Matthew Abraham, Tim Frank, Keith D. Gallagher, Mark Page, Tamberla Perry and Ariel Shafir comprise the remainder of the cast.

"Before Britney Spears and Justin Bieber, there was Marie Antoinette," press notes state. "In David Adjmi's contemporary take on the young queen of France, Marie is a confection created by a society that values extravagance and artifice. But France's love affair with the royals sours as revolution brews, and for Marie, the political suddenly becomes very personal. From the light and breezy banter at the palace to the surging chants of 'Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité!' in the streets, Marie Antoinette holds a mirror up to our contemporary society that might just be entertaining itself to death."

The design team includes Clint Ramos (scenic design), Dede Ayite (costume design), Charles LaPointe (hair and wig design), Japhy Weideman (lighting design), Lindsay Jones (sound and composition) and Jeff Sugg (projection design). Deb Styer is the stage manager, and Cassie Calderone is the assistant stage manager. Steppenwolf's Upstairs Theatre is located at 1650 N Halsted St., IL. Visit for more information.
