According to the New York Post, Uhry has been enlisted by producer Anne Hamburger, who founded the Off-Broadway theatre company En Garde Arts.

The production will feature music from the songbook of the late Johnny Mercer, a Tony nominee for his work on the score of Broadway's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The soundtrack to the 1997 film featured the music of Mercer and included tunes such as "Skylark," "Too Marvelous for Words," "Autumn Leaves," "Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread)," "Dream," "Days of Wine and Roses," "That Old Black Magic," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive," "This Time the Dream's on Me," "Laura," "Midnight Sun," "I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" and "I Wanna Be Around."

The best-selling 1994 novel depicts a range of eccentric personalities in and around the city of Savannah, GA, and centers on the killing of Danny Hansford, a local male prostitute, by Jim Williams — the result of a lovers' quarrel. The death occurred in Williams' home, which was originally built by an ancestor of songwriter and Savannah native Mercer.

Uhry won the Tony Award in 1999 for the Best Book of Parade and was nominated for the book of The Robber Bridegroom. His other works include Driving Miss Daisy, Lovemusik, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Little Johnny Jones and Here's Where I Belong.
