In this episode, actress Penny (Kate Weatherhead) gets called in to audition for a second national tour of the musical, Mean Girls, which includes the original song "Nobody Does Mean Like Me" (written by Santino Fontana and Wetherhead for the episode).

“Submissions Only” was created by Weatherhead and Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Mary Poppins), who plays Donny Rich in the web series. Also featured in the episode are series regulars Colin Hanlon and Lindsay Nicole Chambers (Legally Blonde), and semi-regulars Fontana (…Earnest, Billy Elliot), Anne L. Nathan (Assassins, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Annaleigh Ashford (Wicked).
