Randy Weeks, president and chief operating officer of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, announced the shows Sept. 6 in the Mile High City in Colorado.
The Little Mermaid will feature the score of the Academy Award-winning animated film (lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, music by Alan Menken) and new songs by Alan Menken and Glen Slater. Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife) has penned the libretto.
In addition to Little Mermaid, the 2007 subscription slate at the Denver Center will include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Legends!, The Light in the Piazza, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Monty Python's Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Irving Berlin's White Christmas.
The Little Mermaid will play The Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the summer of 2007, making it the first Denver Center Attractions show to be presented in the venue.
Denver Center Attractions (which presents in venues in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts) has hosted the opening of several national tours, including Disney's The Lion King in 2002. Exact Mermaid dates will be announced at a later date. See separate Playbill.com story about The Little Mermaid.
"This project is terribly exciting and a huge coup for Denver," Weeks stated. "We are looking forward to taking our relationship with Disney Theatricals to a new level next season."
Francesca Zambello will direct.
