Alton Fitzgerald White will perform live at the FireBird Café every Saturday night from July 29 to Aug. 26. The Broadway star's engagement there is titled "How Do I Feel," which is the title of the singer's new CD.
White starred on Broadway as Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime and was recently featured on the national PBS broadcast of Independence Day celebrations from Cincinnati featuring the Cincinnati Pops, conducted by Erich Kunzel. Having appeared in numerous productions throughout Europe, White appeared in a regional production of Dreamgirls and as Jackie Robinson in the Chicago production of The First. He has appeared in various productions including Ain't Misbehavin', The Wiz, Grease, and Chess at such theatres as The Goodman, the San Jose Performing Art Center and the McCarter Theater.
As reported earlier, White had a highly publicized midsummer encounter with the NYPD in 1998 that resulted in his wrongful arrest and a subsequent lawsuit against the City of New York.
At the Firebird, White will perform an 11 PM set every Saturday night, following a 9 PM set by Natalie Douglas.
There is a $30 music charge and a $15 minimum applies. The Firebird Café is located at 365 W. 46 Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. For reservations call (212) 586-0244. For information about White visit www.altofitz.com. -- By Murdoch McBride
