Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj directs and choreographs the fully staged developmental production of the musical, which has music by Friedman, book by Steven M. Jacobson and lyrics by Edward Gallardo, with additional lyrics by Stevie Holland.
Ronny Mercedes and Jessica Fields play teenage lovers in the fast-paced world of New York City's bike messengers. Friedman's score is "is steeped in the Latin rhythms of the city," according to press notes.
The cast also includes J. Cameron Barnett, Kimberly Reid Dunbar, Jene Hernandez, Dennis Holland, Gary Lindemann, Joseph Melendez, Michael Murnoch, Julian Rebolledo and Natalie Toro.
Magpie previously had a staged reading at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2006.
Friedman is best known for the The Me Nobody Knows, which played 378 performances on Broadway from 1970-1971 and received five Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Score for Friedman. His other theatre credits include Platinum, Taking My Turn and Sheba. Founded in 1968, Amas Musical Theatre is an advocate for diversity and multi-ethnic casting in the performing arts.
