Also on the program is the New York premiere of Michael Daugherty's violin concerto Fire and Blood, which was inspired by a mural by Diego Rivera about the automobile industry; Ida Kavafian plays the solo part.
In addition, ACO performs Morton Feldman's de Kooning, which originated as the score for a 1963 documentary about the Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning; and selections from Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George, the 1985 musical inspired by pointillist Georges Seurat's painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte.
The ACO's season continues with two programs of world premieres on January 21 and February 23, 2005, and ends with the orchestra's annual New Music Readings on May 5 and 6 at Columbia University.
