"After 65 years as the American Symphony Orchestra League, we have decided to invigorate our name to reflect our renewed commitment to America's orchestras," League President and CEO Henry Fogel said in a statement. "Through interviews with League board, staff, and membership, we discovered a universal desire for change ... Quite simply, [the new name] states most emphatically who we are."
For the rest of the summer, the organization remains the ASOL; the new name will be implemented in the fall with the launch of a revamped website as well as a new logo and graphic design identity.
According to the League's press release, the change in name has already been received eagerly by the membership. A mere few hours after its adoption, at the annual ASOL Awards Celebration, singer/songwriter Don Schlitz ("The Gambler") regaled a very appreciative crowd with a new song titled "The Unfortunate Acronym."
