Andre Gregory, the noted director and actor, will discuss the making of the art film classic, "Vanya on 42nd Street," after a July 28 screening of the film at the Cape Cinema in Dennis, MA.
The event, which takes place at 4 PM, is a benefit for the nearby Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater.
The film, directed by Louis Malle, and starring Gregory, Julianne Moore, Larry Pine and Wallace Shawn, was an outgrowth of a stage version of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. For four years, off and on, Gregory would gather with a group of friends and colleagues and rehearse the play. They'd work in a rented loft and perform only for select people.
At long last, they put together a production and asked Malle to film it. The 1989 movie takes place in the then-decrepit New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street. Shawn played Vanya.
