WP Theater, formerly known as Women’s Project Theater, has announced that Avenue Q’s Ann Harada will star in the world premiere of Stuffed by Lisa Lampanelli. The Off-Broadway theatre has also announced the world premiere of Rachel Bond's Sundown, Yellow Moon as part of its 2016-17 season, as well as the artists selected for the next WP Lab.
Stuffed, written by and also co-starring two-time Grammy-nominated comic Lampanelli (HBO, Comedy Central, The Howard Stern Show), will begin previews September 23 at the McGinn/Cazale Theater. The show explores the complexity of women’s relationship to food and body image via four characters.
“A bulimic, a compulsive eater, a confident overweight gal, and a chronically thin chick walk into a play and… what happens next could only be told by comic mastermind Lisa Lampanelli,” state production notes. The play features additional material by Ashley Austin Morris and direction by Jackson Gay (These Paper Bullets).
Sundown, Yellow Moon, a play with songs by Bonds, featuring music and lyrics by indie-rock duo The Bengsons, will debut Off-Broadway in March 2017. The world premiere is co-produced with Ars Nova with direction by Drama Desk and OBIE winner Anne Kauffman, with casting to be announced at a later date.
Following the success of the inaugural WP Pipeline Festival, WP has announced the artists for its 2016-18 WP Lab, a two-year residency for writers, directors and producers, that culminates in the festival and the showcasing of new works. Four of the five plays at the 2016 festival were featured in the 2016 Kilroy’s List.
The 2016-18 WP Lab artists follow: writers: Donnetta Lavinia Grays, MJ Kaufman, Sylvia Khoury, Zoe Sarnak and Leah Nanako Winkler; directors: Melissa Crespo, Morgan Gould, Ellie Heyman, Tyne Rafaeli and Mo Zhou; and producers: Roxanna Barrios, SallyCade Holmes, Nidia Medina, Laura Ramadei and Yuvika Tolani.
WP has also announced a new initiative called the Domestic Partner Program, focused on supporting other organizations that are developing work by female artists. WP Theater will welcome companies into residency at the McGinn/Cazale Theater, providing them with rehearsal and theatre space at a reduced rate, as well as artistic, marketing, ticketing and other institutional support, and present their work to WP audiences. The program launches this season with contemporary dance company Monica Bill Barnes & Company (Happy Hour) and PopUp Theatrics (Broken City Trilogy).
