West End leading lady Anna-Jane Casey will play Ella Peterson, the role famously originated by Judy Holliday onstage and in the subsequent 1960 film version, who works at Susanswerphone, an answering service for celebrities on New York's East Side. With plenty of opportunities to indulge her gift for “helping” others, events begin to spiral out of control as Ella falls for hard-drinking playwright Jeff Moss (Gary Milner) and her little white lies come back to haunt her.
Directed by Paul Foster, this new production is produced by Jonathan Russell Productions. It is designed by Christopher Giles, with musical direction and arrangements by Peter McCarthy, choreography by Alistair David and lighting by Tim Mascall.
Casey originated the role of Dot in the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Sunday in the Park with George but was succeeded by Jenna Russell, who took over for the show's West End and Broadway runs. West End credits include playing Velma Kelly in Chicago, and regionally she has won the TMA Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Mack and Mabel.
Bells are Ringing received a Broadway revival in 2001, when it starred Faith Prince as Ella. It was originally produced in the West End in 1957 at the London Colliseum, with a cast led by Janet Blair as Ella.
