Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann will headline the Royal Opera House’s upcoming production of Verdi’s La forza del destino, one of five new productions in the London company’s 2018–2019 season.

The Christof Loy staging, a co-production with Dutch National Opera, will also feature Christopher Maltman (currently appearing in the Met’s Così fan tutte). Performances will run March 21–April 22, 2019.

The season will open September 24 with the launch of Keith Warner’s production of Wagner’s four-part Ring Cycle, conducted by Music Director Antonio Pappano.

The four additional new productions in the lineup are stagings of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, directed by Stefan Herheim and featuring Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko (January 13–February 1); Katya Kabanova, marking Richard Jones’ second production in his Janácek cycle (February 4–26); Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd, directed by Deborah Warner (April 23–May 10); and Hemperdinck’s family-friendly Hansel and Gretel (December 11–29).

Repertory productions filling out the roster include Carmen, Così fan tutte, Boris Godunov, Andrea Chénier, La Traviata, The Marriage of Figaro, and Tosca.

Die Walküre, The Queen of Spades, La Traviata, La forza del destino, and Faust will head to the screen in the Royal Opera’s new Live Cinema Season, along with the ballets Mayerling, La Bayadère, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, and Flight Patter/Within.
