The American Theatre has quite a lot of "Annies," from the little Orphan who sings "Tomorrow" to the tough-talking Annie Oakley, who can't get a man with a gun. But there's never been one quite like Annie Sprinkle, the former adult film actress who has been shaping her experiences in the biz into performance art for several years now.
Her latest piece, having its West Coast premiere at San Francisco's Bay Front Theatre, is Annie Sprinkle's Herstory of Porn -- Reel To Real. Emilio Cubiero directs this look at 25 years in the sexual revolution, which mixes clips from some of Sprinkle's movies (she's made nearly 200) with live commentary and performance. Calling herself a "metamorphosexual, sex positive feminist" and "pleasure activist," Sprinkle is devoted to teaching acceptance of sexuality, AIDS education, and being a "sex-work pioneer."
Herstory of Porn is presented by Climate and Solo Mio -- appropriate, since the Solo Mio Festival presented Sprinkle's Post Porn Modernist both in 1993 and 1994.
For tickets ($15-$20) on Annie Sprinkle's Herstory of Porn at the Bayfront Theatre in the Fort Mason Center, Apr. 29-May 16, call (415) 392-4400. The show will also come to NY's P.S. 122 in the fall, according to the venue's spokesperson, Ron Lasko.
