Florida Stage, the West Palm Beach-area company devoted to new and recent plays, presents the world premiere of Catherine Trieschmann's drama of post-war love — and familial revenge — The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock, Jan. 28-March 8.

Set after the American Civil War, the play "is the story of a young blind woman's romance with a Yankee soldier and her mother's need to avenge her son's death." Cathey Crowell Sawyer, artistic director of Greenbrier Valley Theatre, the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, directs. Opening in Manalapan, FL, is Jan. 30.

According to Florida Stage, "The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock is set in the small town of Blowing Rock, NC, just after end of The Civil War. Soldiers are returning home and struggling to stitch together the pieces of their shattered worlds. Young Laurel and her mother had been Northern sympathizers until the death of her brother sends her mother off in a blind rage. Laurel's budding romance with a smooth talking Union soldier sets her mother off on a path of pure revenge with dire consequences."

The cast includes Lori Gardner as Maizey, Donté Bonner as Bridegroom, Lourelene Snedeker as Elsa, Todd Allen Durkin as Pastor Burns, Susan Cato as Laurel and Ricky Waugh as Jacob.

Trieschmann is the author of crooked, Hot Georgia Sunday, The World of Others and Before the Fire.

The creative team includes Kent Goetz (scenic design), Suzanne M. Jones (lighting design), Mark Pirolo (costume design) and Matt Kelly (sound design).
