The Arena Stage production of John Strand’s drama The Originalist, which was filmed live and broadcast on PBS THIRTEEN’s Theater Close-Up, is now available to stream on-demand at vimeo.com/ondemand/TheOriginalist. Readers can use code PLAYBILL for $1 off a 72-hour rental.
Helen Hayes Award winner Edward Gero portrays the late Supreme Court Justice in the play that follows the frustrating relationship between Scalia and his liberal, Harvard-educated clerk, Cat (Kerry Warren). Their ideological differences lead to both incessant sparring and an unexpected mentorship. Their dynamic is further complicated by Brad (Harlan Work), a fellow clerk on Scalia’s staff.
The 2015 Arena Stage premiere was directed by Molly Smith. The Originalist was produced for the screen by Stage17 (David Stoller, chairman), and was directed for television by Diana Basmajian.
The live capture of The Originalist marks Stage17’s first nationally distributed filmed stage play and is one of several productions it has filmed thus far at LORT Theatres and leading theatres for young audiences across America.
Gero is a four-time Helen Hayes Award winner; his D.C. stage credits include Red, Sweeney Todd, The Chosen, and A Christmas Carol. He reprised his performance as Scalia at the Asolo Repertory Theatre and the Pasadena Playhouse.
