News Arena Stage Will Give American Artist Award to Leslie Uggams at Season Kick-Off Benefit Tony Award-winning stage and screen star Leslie Uggams will be given The American Artist Award at Arena Stage's benefit Season Opening Celebration on Sept. 15 in Washington, DC.

The evening celebrates the launch of Arena Stage's second season at the Mead Center for American Theater. Proceeds from the night will go to Arena Stage's community engagement and educational programs, which educate more than 20,000 students across the region.

Cocktails, dinner and the presentation of award to the Tony and Emmy Award winner, known for Broadway's Hallelujah, Baby! and On Golden Pond, will be followed by a performance of Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress in the Kreeger Theater.

The American Artist Award "honors an artist who has made a significant contribution to American theatre and who represents all that is passionate, exuberant, deep and dangerous in the American spirit," according to Arena. Past awardees include Edward Albee, James Earl Jones, Robert "Bob" Alexander, August Wilson and Arena Stage co-founder Zelda Fichandler.
