News Arkin, McDormand, Cumming Win Indie Spirit Awards Theatre vets Alan Arkin, Frances McDormand and Alan Cumming were among the winners of the Independent Spirit Awards given out Feb. 24 in Santa Monica, CA.

Arkin won Best Supporting Male for "Little Miss Sunshine," and McDormand won Best Supporting Female for "Friends With Money."

Cumming won for producing Ali Selim's "Sweet Land," which took the prize for Best First Feature.

The producers of John Cameron Mitchell's "Shortbus," Howard Gertler and Tim Perell, received the Axium Producers Award, which honors emerging producers and comes with an unrestricted grant of $50,000.

"Little Miss Sunshine" also took prizes for Best Feature, Best Directors (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris) and Best First Screenplay (Michael Arndt).

The winners of Best Male Lead (Ryan Gosling) and Best Female Lead (Shareeka Epps) both came from the film "Half Nelson." Jason Reitman won Best Screenplay for "Thank You for Smoking." "Quinceañera" won the John Cassavetes Award for the best feature made for under $500,000. For more information visit filmindependent.org.
