Davis McCallum (Sex Lives of Our Parents), who also helmed the premiere, returns to stage the New York bow of the drama that centers on an American solider who returns home from the Iraq War. It will officially open Jan. 8, 2013.

Water by the Spoonful is the second part of a trilogy that began with Hudes' Pulitzer Prize finalist work, Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue. McCallum also staged the world premiere of Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue in 2006. The third play in the trilogy, The Happiest Song Plays Last, is scheduled to make its world premiere in April 2013 at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

Each work in the trilogy is shaped and inspired by a different style of music. Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue is influenced by Bach's fugues, while Water By the Spoonful, a larger family drama, used the music of late jazz musician John Coltrane to establish its form. Hudes said the epic family play, which was also inspired by works like Jerusalem and August: Osage County, delivers a "more sprawling, free-for-all set-up."

Riesco, who has been part of the play since early readings, will again play Elliot, with Colon-Zayaz (Living Out, Our Lady of 121st Street) and Guevara (Burn This), as well as new cast members including Tony Award nominee Frankie R. Raison (Fences), Bill Heck (Angels in America) and Sue Jean Kim (The Hallway Trilogy). According to 2ST, "Elliot returns home to Philadelphia to reconnect with his Puerto Rican family after his time spent serving in Iraq. Upon arriving, he finds his family in flux and his career prospects limited. When his mother's online support group begins to overshadow his aspirations for the future, the real and online worlds – one forged by blood, another by survival – collide in this funny, urgent and timely 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner."

The production will have scenic design by Neil Patel, costume design by ESosa, lighting design by Russell Champa, sound design by Josh Schmidt and projection design by Aaron Rhyne. Patel and Champa also designed the 2011 at Hartford Stage.

Hudes was a Pulitzer finalist for Elliot and for the musical In the Heights (Tony winner for Best Musical and Tony nominee for Best Book of a Musical). She wrote the book and lyrics for a children's musical, Barrio Grrrl!, which premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and toured nationally. She received a B.A. in music composition from Yale and an M.F.A. in playwriting from Brown, where she studied with Paula Vogel.
