The script to Art, Yasmina Reza's runaway international hit play, will be published in March by Faber & Faber.
Reza's three-character comedy/drama starts simply enough. An art-lover buys a painting that is completely white. Oh, there's textured brushwork, and maybe a trace of red if you look closely. But it's basically white -- and awesomely expensive.
His best friend is appallled. The purchase calls into question everything he has believed about his friend -- and threatens their friendship itself. The third man in the triangle tries to stay neutral, but winds up alienating both his old buddies. The play is about the meaning of modern art -- and the meaning of friendship, particularly male friendship.
The play has been selling out in London with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. A cast reportedly is being assembled for a Broadway premiere in the 1997-98 season.
The script can be ordered from Drama Book Shop in Manhattan at (212) 944-0595.
