News Artistic Director Andrew Upton Sets Departure from Sydney Theatre Company Andrew Upton, who served as co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company along with his wife, Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett – and later assumed sole leadership of the organization – will exit his role there at the end of the year.

Upton and Blanchett joined STC in 2008. The two previously announced plans to vacate their roles at the end of 2013; however, Upton later opted to remain with STC for an additional season. 

STC is currently seeking a successor for Upton in order to begin immediate planning for the 2017 season. Details of Upton's final program for STC's 2016 season will be announced in September.

Sydney Theatre Company has been represented in New York with The Maids, Uncle Vanya and A Streetcar Named Desire, all starring Blanchett.

Among the artists who performed at STC are Mel Gibson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, Geoffrey Rush, Toni Collette, Rose Byrne and members of the original Broadway cast of August: Osage County.
