Classic Arts News   Artistic Director Matthew Epstein to Leave Chicago Lyric

The Lyric Opera of Chicago will not renew artistic director Matthew A. Epstein's contract when it expires at the end of the current season, the company announced today.

"Matthew and I have enjoyed an excellent relationship for many years," said general director William Mason in a statement, "but our visions for the company diverged. I thank him for his many valuable contributions to Lyric and wish him the best with his future endeavors."

Epstein, a longtime executive at Columbia Artists Management, served as artistic advisor to the Lyric beginning in 1980, and was named artistic director in 1999. He previously served as the general director of Welsh National Opera and artistic director of BAM Opera at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
