Classic Arts News As Late Substitute, Salvatore Licitra Will Sing Both Leads in Met's Cav/Pag Tonight Tenor Salvatore Licitra will sing both Turiddu in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Canio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci in tonight's performance of the classic double-bill at the Metropolitan Opera. While Licitra was already scheduled to sing Canio, he has agreed to step in as Turiddu for Frank Porretta, who is ill.
The last tenor to take on both roles at the Met on the same night was Ermanno Mauro on December 13, 1988. The list of other tenors who have sung both leading parts in a single evening at the house is surprisingly short: Plšcido Domingo (in a telecast performance in 1978), Kurt Baum (1951), Frederick Jagel (1934 and 1935), and Thomas Salignac (1901).
