Directed by Asian Story's artistic director, Kent Lee Brisby, the musical features a book and lyrics by Brisby with music by Juaquin "Quino" McWhinney, Opetaia Foa'i, Francisco Astudillo, Quintinn Holi and Stu Shames.
The Musical Paul Gauguin, according to press notes, is "based on the life, journals, art and journeys of world-traveling artist and amateur musician, Paul Gauguin. Gauguin's story is a modern tale of multiculturalism, reflected in the diverse world music score. The original workshop production uses music and multimedia to carry audiences through his youth in Peru, to the artist colonies of Celtic-descended Brittany in France, to living with freed slaves of Martinique in the Caribbean, and the paradise of Tahiti that inspired some of his most famous paintings and carvings."
The cast of performers and instrumentalists includes Kat Fitzpatrick (Peruvian and Caribbean percussion), Connie Viado (flute, keyboard), Michael Nieto (Andean charango, mandolin, bass, percussion), Rhys Green (Caribbean, Polynesian, Peruvian percussion), Albert Park (electric guitar, concertina), Edie Heali'i Stanley (ukelele, Polynesian percussion) and Paul Gauguin-Byron LaDue (guitar, concertina, keys).
Patrick Wheyland, who will perform various traditional and modern stringed instruments, musically directs. Stanley provides choreography.
Other members of the creative team include designer Marilia Maschion, Kathy Gore Stanley, Mario Torero, Cheryl Lindley, Andy Lowe, Lynn Dewart and stage manager Deborah Climo. Following the Losina Art Center, The Musical Paul Gauguin will play Centro Cultural de La Raza Nov. 12-13; Bali Hai Restaurant Nov. 18 and Nov. 20; Heali'i's Polynesian Revue Nov. 19; and the San Diego Maritime Museum Nov. 25-27.
