Classic Arts News Audra McDonald and Reneé Fleming Headline Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night Gala October 3 Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony launch the 2018–2019 season in an evening featuring opera, music theatre, and orchestral music by Gershwin and Liszt.

Carnegie Hall’s 2018–2019 season launches October 3 at 7 PM in a gala concert in the Stern Auditorium featuring the San Francisco Symphony under the baton of Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas, and featuring two titans of the theatre and opera world: Audra McDonald and Renée Fleming.

Six-time Tony Award winner McDonald and Fleming, a Tony nominee for her performance in the recent Broadway revival of Carousel, will offer a selection of show tunes and opera arias and duets including works by Stephen Sondheim, Adam Guettel, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Bock and Harnick, George and Ira Gershwin, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

The 75-minute program will feature orchestral selections including George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, as well as Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, and Ravel’s La valse.

Thomas is set to curate a total of seven concerts in the season as part of Carnegie Hall’s Perspectives series.

Season highlights also include The New York Pops’ October 19 presentation of Roll Over Beethoven: A Different Kind Of Orchestra, showcasing music from the likes of Elvis Presley and the Beatles, featuring Las Vegas favorite Frankie Moreno. The lineup continues November 16 with a tribute to Broadway featuring the Essential Voices USA choir and the New York Theatre ballet, a December 22 holiday program with guest artist Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Tony winner Billy Porter in Unforgettable: Celebrating Nat King Cole and Friends February 8, 2019, and Ashley Park, Ryan Silverman, Storm Large, and Ryan Shaw in Movie Mixtape: Songs from the Silver Screen March 15.
