The win puts McDonald in company with such four-time winners as Angela Lansbury and Gwen Verdon. Julie Harris is the record holder, having won five Tony Award over her career.

McDonald's achievement is also remarkable in that she has won all of her prizes in the supporting category. Her other awards were for the musicals Carousel and Ragtime and the play Master Class. Raisin is the only one of her winning vehicles in which she has not sung a note on stage.

The only time McDonald was nominated for a Tony Award and didn't win was for Marie Christine.
