True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters announced the winners of the 8th August Wilson Monologue Competition, which took place May 2 at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre. The annual contest featured high school students from across the country performing monologues by the late, celebrated American playwright.

In first place, and recipient of the $1,500 cash prize, was Ireon Roach; second place was Damaris Vizvett; and third place was DaMya Gurley. Each of the winners is eligible for college scholarship opportunities, and all 18 finalists received the gift of TCG’s Century Cycle collection.

In preparation for the finals, each student worked with two of Mr. Wilson’s closest collaborators: director Kenny Leon and dramaturg Todd Kreidler.

The competition is aimed at introducing the late Wilson’s work to new generations and nurturing his legacy.
