Cody Simpson, the Australian pop star and Cody Simpson & the Tide frontman known for such songs as "Underwater" and "Surfboard," is set to make waves on Broadway. He'll make his debut as Dmitry in Anastasia beginning November 29.
He succeeds original cast member Zach Adkins, who took on the role of Dmitry from Derek Klena earlier this year. Adkins takes his final bow at the Broadhurst Theatre November 25.
Simpson, whose albums include Paradise, Surfers Paradise, and Free, will join a cast currently led by Christy Altomare as Anya, Tony winner Judy Kaye as the Dowager Empress, Tony nominee Max von Essen as Gleb, Vicki Lewis as Countess Lily, and John Bolton as Vlad.
The Darko Tresnjak-helmed musical, based on the 1997 animated film, opened on Broadway in April 2017. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who earned Oscar nominations for the score and song "Journey to the Past," composed new material for the stage adaptation, reuniting with their Ragtime collaborator Terrence McNally, who penned the book.
