News Australia's Helpmann Awards Honor Cate Blanchett, Waiting for Godot and More The 2014 Helpmann Awards, honoring the best in live performance in Australia, were presented Aug. 18.

Hosted by Jonathan Biggins, the ceremony was held at Sydney's Capitol Theatre.

"Tonight we celebrated the very best of our talented live performance industry. Our annual Ticketing Survey 2013 released today shows that the industry recorded record revenue growth generating $1.479 billion, up 22.7% on 2012. More than 17.9 million people attended live events in 2013 indicating that Australians continue to engage with and be entertained by our wonderful productions across all the live performance genres," Evelyn Richardson, chief executive of Live Performance Australia, said in a statement.

Presenters included Geoffrey Rush, Nancye Hayes, Lucy Durack, Simon Gleeson, Pamela Rabe, Danielle Cormack, Simon Burke, Helen Dallimore, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Craig McLachlan, Robert Grubb, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Linden Wilkinson, Kelley Abbey, James Reyne, Deborah Conway, Lucinda Dunn, Gale Edwards, John Robertson, Ursula Yovich, Craig Hassall, Martin Crewes, David McAllister, Rafael Bonachela, John Tiffany and Lou Diamond Phillips.

The ceremony featured live performances from Disney's The Lion King, Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Les Misérables, Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom The Musical and a medley from The King and I with Lisa McCune, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lou Diamond Phillips.

John Frost AM and Patricia Boggs received special honors; the former received the 2014 JC Williamson Award, while Boggs received the Sue Nattrass Award. Best Special Event Award was presented to Destination NSW for Vivid Sydney 2013. Sweet Charity received three awards: Best Direction of a Musical went to Dean Bryant, Best Female Actor in a Musical to Verity Hunt-Ballard and Best Choreography to Andrew Hallsworth. Heather Mitchell won Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Strictly Ballroom The Musical. Craig McLachlan won Best Male Actor in a Musical for Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show, and Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical went to Reg Livermore for Wicked. The King and I won Best Musical.

Michael Kantor won Best Direction of a Play for The Shadow King. Cate Blanchettt won Best Female Actor in a Play for The Maids, while Robyn Nevin won Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play for Angels in America. Best Male Actor in a Play went to Richard Roxburgh for Waiting for Godot and Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play went to Luke Mullins for Waiting for Godot; the production also won Best Play.
