The Brooklyn Academy of Music continues its 2018 Next Wave Festival with Cheek by Jowl and the Pushkin Theatre, Moscow's modern-dress Measure for Measure. Performances run October 16–21in the BAM Harvey Theater.

Measure for Measure is directed and designed by Cheek by Jowl co-artistic directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod.

A look at Shakespeare’s play through a dissection of power and shame, the story follows a corrupt government in Vienna as it polices its convents, prisons, and brothels. The contemporary design features three red boxes that serve as live-action vignettes, posing timeless questions about authority, justice, and love.

The production was nominated for five Russian Golden Mask awards, including Best Large Scale Drama Production and Best Director for Donnellan.

The 2018 Next Wave Festival kicked off October 3 with SITI Company's production of Euripides’ The Bacchae, directed by Anne Bogart (October 3–7 in the Harvey Theater). The annual festival, which continues throughout the fall, features 27 works across music, opera, theatre, dance, film, music, and performance art from around the world.
