While the 2002 Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center got a lot of attention in the Washington, DC, theatre community, it wasn't necessarily the focus of the annual Helen Hayes Awards. The MacArthur Awards for new musical and play went to Polk County and Shakespeare, Moses, Joe Papp, respectively. Outstanding Resident Productions were Synetic Theater's Hamlet (play) and Kennedy Center's Sweeney Todd. Christine Baranski took a Hayes for Outstanding Lead Actress (Resident Musical) for Sweeney Todd. Broadway's Brian Stokes Mitchell won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor (Non-Resident Musical) for his work in the pre-Broadway tour of Man of LaMancha.

Outstanding Non-Resident Production was Lypsinka! The Boxed Set, seen at The Studio Theatre.
