News Barbara Barsky Is Mama Rose in Vancouver Gypsy The Arts Club Theatre Company's new production of the musical fable Gypsy, starring acclaimed actress Barbara Barsky as Mama Rose, opens May 16 in Vancouver, after previews from May 10.

Performances of the Stephen Sondheim-Jule Styne-Arthur Laurents show will continue to July 8 at Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.

Barbara Barsky is fresh off her Jessie Award–nominated performance in the Firehall's Urinetown, and a critically acclaimed performance in William Finn's Elegies in Toronto. She's a four-time Dora Award nominee for her work on Toronto stages.

The backstage story of the origin of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee is directed by Bill Millerd, who stated, "Barbara Barsky has been preparing all of her professional life for one of the greatest roles in musical theatre — Mama Rose. As one of Canada's most talented and magnetic musical theatre performers, I know she is going to electrify audiences when she takes on Gypsy's show-stopping musical numbers."

Those numbers include "Rose's Turn," "Some People," "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and more.

The Arts Club's Gypsy also features Lauren Bowler as Gypsy Rose Lee, Andrew Wheeler as Herbie and Scott Augustine, Jianna Ballard, Carolyn Bergstrand, Sierra Brewerton, Darren Burkett, Bernard Cuffling, Jackee Guillou, Carson Hollier, David Hurwitz, Irene Karas, Marc Levin, Jessica Marino, Keri Minty, Jennifer Neumann, Peter New, Shane Snow, Melissa Young and Brie-Anna Zaidel. Musical direction is by Bruce Kellett, with choreography by Valerie Easton.

The creative team includes Ted Roberts (set), Marsha Sibthorpe (lights), Alison Green (costumes) and Chris Daniels (sound).
