Set in Paris as it hurtles towards violent revolution, Mishima's play brings the story of the (unseen) Marquis de Sade to life through the eyes of six remarkable women, including his wife Renée (Pike), who – against the wishes of her mother, Madame de Mountreuil (Dench) — remains vehemently devoted to her husband, the Marquis de Sade, the notorious aristocrat imprisoned in the Bastille for his lurid escapades and licentious behavior.

Barber plays Comtesse de Saint-Fond. She previously appeared at the Donmar in Terry Johnson's Insignificance. Her recent theatre credits include playing Goneril in King Lear and Madame Arkadina in The Seagull (in Trevor Nunn's RSC productions), Antony and Cleopatra (Shakespeare's Globe), Aladdin (Old Vic) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Edinburgh Festival & Gielgud Theatre). For television, her work includes "Hotel Babylon," "Beautiful People," "Hustle," "The I.T. Crowd," "Bremner Bird and Fortune," "Manchild" and "Real Women"; and for film, "Goal," "Photographing Fairies" and "Prick Up Your Ears."

Button plays Anne. For theatre her work includes Hay Fever (Manchester Royal Exchange), Ring Round the Moon (Playhouse Theatre) and Rock 'n' Roll (Duke of York's Theatre). Her television credits include "The Omid Djalili Show" and "The Palace."

Findlay, who has previously appeared at the Donmar in Grandage's productions of The Vortex, The Cut and John Gabriel Borkman, plays Baronesse de Simiane. Other theatre includes Vincent River (New York) and The House of Bernarda Alba, The Mandate, Mother Clap's Molly House, The Winter's Tale and Stanley (for which she won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress), all at the National Theatre. For television, her credits include "Torchwood," "Gunrush," "Wilfred Owen," "Cranford," "This Life – 10 Years On," "The Family Man," "Black Books," "Wives and Daughters" and "Messiah"; and for film, "Summer," "Vanity Fair," "The End of the Affair" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply". Galloway plays Charlotte. She has previously appeared at the Donmar in Nine, How I Learned to Drive and Electra. Her other theatre credits include The Music Man (Chichester Festival Theatre), Les Misérables (Broadhurst Theater, New York), Henry V (Manchester Royal Exchange) and Show Boat (Royal Albert Hall). For television, her credits include "Wyrdsister," "Armadillo and Whistleblower"; and for film, "In Transit," "About a Boy" and "Christmas Carol."

Madame de Sade will be followed by Jude Law's Hamlet, also directed by Grandage, that begins performances May 29, 2009 and concludes the Donmar West End season at Wyndham's.
